Letton HallForty-eight people booked to come on the Weekend Away and after a few delays/wrong turns on the way were given a very warm welcome at Letton Hall in rural Norfolk. Friday night was spent finding the way around the 18th Century House with its beautiful architectural features and fascinating network of little corridors and doors! Speakers Archdeacon David Newman and his wife Rev Helen Newman led a short introductory service, looking at the first chapter of the Gospel of Mark. Later in the weekend they expanded on this theme, talking about how we can know that we are beloved by God, and the blessings of belonging to the community of believers. They also had a session where they answered a wide range of questions. Their challenge to us was that we should be like Jesus, who said “Let’s go somewhere else” – where is that “somewhere else” beyond the church walls that we need to take the message of God’s love? Gillian led the Youth sessions with Simon Clay, and Simon, Vic, Andrew and Dawn led musical worship. The weather for the weekend was kind; food fabulous; the views of surrounding golden fields of corn were spectacular; there was time to explore the woods and grounds and some also visited the historic sights of the nearby town of Dereham.

Young and old participated in Go-Karting, some treating it competitively, and some crashing. Andrew captured the “Big Stig” trophy and Harry the “Little Stig” trophy. Vic organised a quiz which had people going from second floor to the basement searching for clues, as well as exploring the grounds! The Quiz trophy was collected by Sian on behalf of Jo’s team after a lively evening session. Ben and Parish Administrator James revealed hidden talents by building a wonderful campfire, which was accompanied by toasted marshmallows and hot chocolate. Humble apologies for locking James and Peter out whilst they doused and cleared it later that night! On Sunday all gathered for Communion and prayer together before heading back to Lutterworth.

Comments on the best bits of the weekend included: “Being made to feel welcome” “There was a real sense of family” “Finding some indescribable places and being with friends” “Meeting brand new people” “Having a mixture of quiet personal space; fun modern hymns and very formal worship.” In summary it was a beautiful location and so encouraging to be together – many thanks to all who organised it, and PLEASE CAN WE GO BACK!
